If your programmatic DOOH or direct-sold campaigns are under-delivering, the culprit is often not the creative, the bid, or the daypart. It is the invisible connectivity layer that keeps screens “live” on dashboards while ads stall, proof-of-play gaps appear, and revenue leaks.

For operators of DOOH, retail media, and other ad revenue-generating networks, connectivity is the heartbeat. When a screen drops, ads freeze, data stops, and revenue halts. Yet many networks still treat connectivity as a set-and-forget utility instead of a core revenue driver. Below are six common connectivity mistakes that quietly break real-time bidding (RTB), direct schedulers, and proof-of-play integrity, as well as make stable, independent connectivity matter at every screen.

1. Depending on Venue Wi‑Fi or Shared Networks as the Primary Path

Many networks launch with the simplest path: plug into the venue’s Wi‑Fi or share the host’s internet. It works during the pilot. Then the venue changes the Wi‑Fi password, reboots the router, adds new POS devices, or prioritizes guest traffic over signage.

For programmatic and direct campaigns, this shows up as:

Intermittent “live” status in the CMS while content fails to refresh.

Missed dynamic triggers (weather, traffic, audience) that rely on timely data.

Proof-of-play logs that arrive late or incomplete, creating gaps in reporting.

Venue networks were built for people and POS, not for always-on, revenue-generating screens. When connectivity is shared, ad delivery competes with everything else on that network. In programmatic DOOH, uptime is a quality gate: screens generally must hold above the ~95% uptime threshold that most DSP quality configurations use, or they stop attracting bids.

Stable connectivity matters for every vertical, from transit and QSR to fuel, pharmacy, and fitness, because every screen is a revenue node. When connectivity wobbles, the network under-delivers as a whole. The payoff is consistent performance across the estate.

2. Treating “Online” Device Status as Proof the Ad Is Running

A device can be online while the ad experience is broken. Generic MDM or basic device dashboards often confirm that a player is powered and connected, but they cannot verify what is actually displayed.

This creates the classic “screen offline but looks on” scenario:

The player shows green in the dashboard.

The last cached playlist keeps looping.

New campaigns, updates, and dynamic triggers never land.

Proof-of-play data is stale or missing, so campaigns appear to under-deliver even though the screen “looks fine.”

For programmatic buyers and direct advertisers, this gap between device status and on-screen output is critical. Network performance is measured by on-screen output, not device status. Operators need proof-of-play that includes screenshots, playback logs, and audit trails that validate campaign delivery, not just a heartbeat that says the box is powered. The payoff is proof that ads actually ran.

When connectivity is unstable, players may keep playing old content indefinitely while appearing healthy. Without visibility into what is actually on-screen, operators cannot explain delivery gaps to advertisers or protect yield. The payoff is fewer disputes and stronger yield protection.

3. Letting Latency and Packet Loss Break Real-Time Bidding and Triggers

Programmatic DOOH relies on timely communication between screens, SSPs, DSPs, and data providers. Even when a screen is technically “up,” high latency, jitter, or packet loss can break the flow:

Bid requests time out before the auction completes.

Dynamic triggers (foot traffic, weather, inventory levels) arrive too late to influence the impression.

Content updates and playlist changes queue but do not apply in time for the scheduled slot.

This is especially painful for networks that sell on performance:

Advertisers see lower effective impression counts.

Triggers appear unreliable, so buyers reduce bids or pause campaigns.

Proof-of-play timestamps drift, making reconciliation harder.

Latency and packet loss often come from congested venue networks, oversubscribed cellular links, or routers without proper traffic prioritization. For ad revenue-generating networks, connectivity must be engineered for low-latency, consistent throughput, and graceful recovery, as it is not just “some connection.”

4. Running Single-Carrier, Single-Link Setups With No Failover

Many networks deploy with one carrier and one link per screen. It keeps costs simple until a tower goes down, a fibre cut happens, or a venue’s ISP has an outage. Then entire clusters of screens drop at once.

In programmatic and direct-sold environments, this looks like:

Sudden, location-based under-delivery that correlates with carrier or ISP incidents.

Campaigns that hit daily caps in some markets and miss them in others, with no clear pattern.

Proof-of-play gaps that align with known network outages but are hard to explain to advertisers.

A screen that drops mid-campaign under-delivers, as the advertiser paid for impressions that did not run. For networks that monetize uptime, single-link architectures turn normal infrastructure events into revenue events.

Multi-carrier, multi-link designs with automatic failover are now table stakes for serious DOOH and retail media networks. The goal is not just redundancy; it is consistent availability so that every screen remains bid-eligible and schedule-compliant. The payoff is resilience that keeps campaigns live.

5. Ignoring Data-Plan Design and Throttling Behavior

DOOH content flows are bursty: playlists and creatives push in bursts, while heartbeats, health data, and proof-of-play run continuously in the background. If data plans are too small, throttled, or poorly structured, operators see:

Content updates delayed until off-peak hours.

Proof-of-play uploads queued or dropped during throttling windows.

Dynamic campaigns that cannot fetch fresh data when needed.

Some networks also run into issues when:

Plans are structured per device without pooling, making it hard to balance usage across the estate.

Carriers throttle after certain thresholds, silently degrading performance instead of cutting off outright.

Overage charges force operators to restrict updates, which then impacts delivery.

For programmatic and direct campaigns, this shows up as inconsistent performance by location or time of day. Advertisers notice that some screens always deliver while others seem flaky, even though the hardware and CMS are identical. The difference is often the data plan and how it interacts with real-world usage patterns. The payoff is more even delivery across locations.

Right-sizing the data plan matters. DOOH content is mostly cached and updated periodically, not streamed continuously, so data use is manageable if the architecture caches well. But that only works when the plan and the player behavior are aligned.

6. Lacking Heartbeat Monitoring and Fast Recovery Processes

Even well-designed networks experience blips: power cycles, router reboots, firmware updates, and venue changes. The difference between a minor blip and a revenue-impacting outage is often monitoring and response.

Common gaps include:

No heartbeat monitoring per player, so outages are discovered days later by an advertiser or host.

Dashboards that show device status but not proof-of-display telemetry (whether the screen is actually on and showing content).

No fast, known process to recover a dark screen (remote reboot, host call, dispatch), so outages stretch from minutes to days.

In programmatic DOOH, a screen that drops offline does not just miss plays, as it falls below the quality bar and stops attracting demand. For direct-sold networks, the same screen becomes a liability during audits and renewals.

Operators need:

Heartbeat monitoring where every player reports in and a missed heartbeat triggers an alert before the host or advertiser notices.

Proof-of-display telemetry that confirms the screen is on and showing content, not just that the player is powered.

Fast response workflows so outages are measured in minutes, not days.

This is not about blaming infrastructure teams. It is about recognizing that connectivity monitoring and recovery are part of the revenue engine, not just IT hygiene. The payoff is treating recovery as revenue protection.

Why Stable Connectivity Matters Beyond CPG Brands

A lot of DOOH conversation centers on CPG campaigns and big retail media networks. But stable connectivity is critical for every revenue-generating screen, regardless of vertical or campaign type:

Transit and fuel networks rely on timely content for promotions, safety messages, and partner ads.

QSR and restaurant screens depend on menu accuracy, dayparting, and localized offers.

Pharmacy, fitness, and service-based networks use screens for education, upsell, and partner messaging.

Smart vending, kiosk, and ATM-adjacent screens blend transactions with ad content, where downtime affects both sales and media.

When connectivity is unstable, all of these use cases suffer:

Dynamic content stops reflecting real-world conditions.

Proof-of-play becomes unreliable, complicating advertiser reporting and renewals.

Networks lose yield because screens drop below quality thresholds or miss scheduled slots.

For operators, the question is not whether connectivity matters. It is whether the network is engineered to protect revenue at every screen, every day. The payoff is sustained revenue at scale.

The Invisible Layer Behind “Live” Screens

Programmatic DOOH is not delivering. Direct ad campaigns are under-delivering. Screen is offline but looks on. These are common operator queries because the connectivity layer is invisible until it breaks.

Latency, packet loss, intermittent drops, and silent throttling break RTB and direct schedulers in ways that look like bidding or creative problems but are actually delivery infrastructure problems. Technical outages or connectivity problems at the screen level reduce actual ad plays versus what the platform projects, and that gap can look like a bidding problem when it is actually a connectivity issue.

For DOOH, retail media, and ad revenue-generating networks, connectivity is not a back-office detail. It is a core product attribute that determines:

Whether screens remain bid-eligible in programmatic marketplaces.

Whether direct-sold campaigns hit their contracted impression counts.

Whether proof-of-play data is complete, timely, and audit-ready.

Operators who treat connectivity as a strategic layer, with independent links, multi-carrier resilience, proper data-plan design, and real monitoring, see fewer delivery gaps, cleaner reporting, and more reliable revenue.

About CyberCentra

CyberCentra is a niche provider focused on revenue-generating DOOH, retail media, and distributed networks. 6 Connectivity Mistakes That Make Programmatic and Direct Ads Under-Deliver

If you run digital screens, kiosks, or a retail media network, you already know that uptime is everything. When a screen is online, it can deliver ads, promotions, and experiences that drive revenue. When it goes offline, that revenue opportunity disappears.

Many operators start out using the Wi‑Fi that is already available in stores, malls, and venues. That is a natural first step. As networks grow and start carrying real ad revenue, the conversation often shifts toward connectivity that the operator can see, manage, and rely on.

This post walks through the 7 risks of running DOOH and kiosk networks on someone else’s Wi‑Fi. The goal is not to critique venue partners or existing networks. It is to help you spot hidden friction points and think through how they can affect impressions, proof‑of‑play, and ad revenue.

1. Outages You Cannot Predict Can Lead to Missed Impressions

Store and venue Wi‑Fi is usually designed for people, not for always‑on advertising infrastructure. That means it can be affected by routine events like router reboots, ISP maintenance, or simple human error.

When the network drops, your screens may go offline without warning. For a DOOH or retail media operator, each minute offline can mean:

Missed impressions that were already sold or bid on

Campaigns that under‑deliver and may need make‑goods

Lost transactions on revenue‑generating kiosks and vending screens

In programmatic DOOH, buyers often look for networks that can consistently meet uptime expectations. Screens that frequently dip below these levels may receive less demand over time, even after they come back online.

The business impact is straightforward. Fewer impressions delivered means lower revenue and weaker performance versus what was promised to advertisers.

2. Shared Bandwidth Can Slow Down Creative and Affect the Viewer Experience

Most venue networks carry many types of traffic at once. Guest devices, staff phones, POS systems, card readers, and sometimes streaming TVs all share the same connection.

Digital signage needs two things from the network:

Enough bandwidth to download new creative, playlists, and updates

A small but steady stream for heartbeats, health checks, and proof‑of‑play logs

During busy periods, that shared pipe can get congested. Content pushes may stall, and screens can buffer or freeze on older creative. The screen is still on, but the ad experience does not look as intended.

For retail media and DOOH teams, this can show up as:

Lower effective viewability because creative does not refresh on time

Questions from advertisers about why certain ads did not appear as planned

A less consistent in‑store experience for venue partners and shoppers

Congestion does not always look like a full outage. It often looks like slow or uneven delivery that quietly affects campaign quality over time.

3. Gaps in Proof‑of‑Play Can Make Reporting and Billing Harder

Proof‑of‑play, often called PoP, is the record that shows which ads ran, where, and for how long. It is a key part of billing, reporting, and programmatic eligibility.

PoP depends on a steady connection to send logs from each screen back to your platform. If the venue Wi‑Fi drops or becomes unstable, these logs can be delayed, incomplete, or lost. That can create three challenges:

Less confidence when billing for impressions you believe ran

Advertisers and agencies asking more questions about your reporting

Programmatic platforms seeing inconsistent data and potentially reducing demand for that inventory

Many retail media and DOOH networks treat uptime and reliable PoP as a basic requirement for programmatic participation. Demand-side platforms may deprioritize screens that often go offline or fail to report.

In practice, unstable Wi‑Fi does not just cause outages. It can create data gaps that make your inventory look less predictable to buyers.

4. Security Events on the Venue Network Can Affect Your Screens

When your screens share a network with a venue’s POS, guest Wi‑Fi, and other devices, you are part of that network’s security landscape. If the venue experiences a ransomware attempt, malware outbreak, or security lockdown, your screens can be taken offline as part of the response.

Because you do not control the infrastructure, you also do not control:

How quickly the network is restored

Whether your devices are allowed back on after a security event

What security policies or firewall rules are applied in the meantime

For a DOOH or retail media operator, a security incident on someone else’s network can mean:

Sudden, network‑wide screen outages across multiple locations

Inability to push emergency content or updates during a crisis

Longer downtime while the venue IT team focuses on their core systems first

This risk becomes more important as networks scale. One venue security issue can affect many revenue‑generating screens that all depend on that single network.

5. Password Changes, Portals, and Firewall Rules Can Break Connectivity Without Warning

Venue IT teams regularly update Wi‑Fi passwords, rotate credentials, or adjust firewall rules as part of normal operations. These changes are invisible to you until your screens stop connecting.

Common breaking changes include:

Wi‑Fi password or SSID changes that require manual re‑enrollment

Captive portals that require a click‑through, which media players cannot complete

New firewall rules that block the outbound traffic your CMS, player, or analytics need

The result is often a silent failure. The screen appears powered on in the store, but it cannot reach your platform to fetch content or send logs. Teams may not notice until an advertiser asks why a campaign did not run or a store manager reports stale creative.

For operators managing many locations, chasing down credential and firewall issues on external networks can become a reactive operations burden. It diverts time from growth, sales, and campaign optimization.

6. Less Visibility Can Mean Slower Troubleshooting and More Site Visits

When your screens rely on venue Wi‑Fi, you depend on the venue to notice and fix network problems. That can create a gap between what your platform reports and what is actually happening on the ground.

Typical symptoms include:

Devices marked as offline in your dashboard with no clear reason

Intermittent connectivity that does not show up on simple speed tests

Uncertainty about whether an issue is the player, the content, or the venue network

Without clear visibility, teams often resort to:

Escalating to store or venue staff who may not prioritize signage

Sending technicians to site to reboot or reconfigure devices

Assuming hardware failure and replacing players that were actually fine

Each unnecessary site visit adds cost and delays revenue recovery. For distributed DOOH, kiosk, and retail media networks, these costs add up quickly as the footprint grows.

Operators who control their own connectivity can see signal strength, carrier, data usage, and device health in one place. That visibility turns vague network issues into specific, fixable problems.

7. Scaling Becomes More Complex When Every Site Depends on a Different Network

At pilot scale, relying on store or venue Wi‑Fi can feel manageable. You can work around variations on a per-site basis. As you add locations, the complexity grows faster than the number of screens.

Each new venue may have:

A different ISP, router model, and Wi‑Fi setup

Unique security policies and IT contacts

Its own schedule for maintenance and changes

That variability can make it harder to:

Guarantee consistent uptime across the network

Provide advertisers with reliable SLAs and performance expectations

Onboard new locations quickly without long back‑and‑forth with venue IT

For retail media and DOOH operators, this can slow growth and weaken your value proposition. Advertisers and agencies want predictable delivery across a network, not inconsistent performance managed on a case-by-case basis.

Controlling your own connectivity layer turns each new site into a repeatable deployment instead of a new set of unknowns. That consistency is what allows networks to scale with confidence.

How Operators Are Thinking About Owned, Carrier‑Grade Connectivity

Many DOOH, retail media, and kiosk operators are moving toward connectivity they can manage end to end. The goal is to protect the revenue and reporting that depend on always‑on screens.

Common elements of this approach include:

Dedicated cellular connections for each screen or site, using multi‑carrier SIMs so devices can switch between networks if one has an issue

Remote router and device management so teams can see status, reboot, and troubleshoot without visiting the site

Failover designs that use cellular as primary and venue Wi-Fi as backup, or vice versa, depending on the location

Centralized dashboards that show uptime, signal quality, data usage, and proof‑of‑play health across the entire network

This model keeps signage traffic off the venue’s payment and guest networks where possible, prevents connectivity single points of failure, reduces PCI and security scope, and gives operators a clear line of sight into every device.

The business outcome is simple: more stable delivery, cleaner reporting, and stronger trust from advertisers and venue partners.

Questions DOOH and Retail Media Teams Are Asking

If you work in DOOH, retail media, or ad‑supported kiosk networks, you may be searching for answers to questions like:

Why do my screens go offline in stores?

Is venue Wi‑Fi reliable for digital signage?

Why are retail media screens not delivering campaigns?

Why are there digital signage Wi‑Fi problems?

Why is proof‑of‑play not matching what ran in store?

These searches point to the same underlying theme. Connectivity that is not designed specifically for revenue‑generating screen networks can create hidden friction.

The seven risks above help explain why many operators are rethinking who owns the network behind their screens. The aim is not to add complexity, but to remove the hidden risks that can cause missed impressions, broken reporting, and lost revenue.

Turning Connectivity Into a Revenue Asset

For modern DOOH and retail media networks, connectivity is part of the revenue infrastructure. When screens stay online and report accurately, campaigns deliver, advertisers stay confident, and venue partners see consistent value.

When connectivity is unstable, the opposite can happen. Impressions disappear, proof‑of‑play gaps create billing questions, and programmatic demand may pull back from inventory that looks less predictable.

Operators who treat connectivity as a strategic layer, not an afterthought, often gain:

Higher effective uptime across their footprint

Cleaner, more trustworthy proof‑of‑play and analytics

Stronger positioning when selling to advertisers and agencies

Fewer emergency calls from stores and venues about broken screens

That shift often starts with a simple question. If this network drives real revenue, should we rely on a Wi‑Fi password we do not control?

7 Risks of Running DOOH and Kiosk Networks on Someone Else’s Wi‑Fi

If you manage a DOOH or retail media network, truck rolls are part of the job. Screens go dark, connectivity drops, hardware ages out. Someone eventually has to go onsite, and that’s normal.

But there’s something worth sitting with about that cost, and it’s that a truck roll is never really one fixed number. What it actually costs depends on what the technician finds when they get there. A quick reboot that takes ten minutes onsite is a very different expense than a fault that takes a couple of hours to isolate, or one that needs a second trip because the first visit didn’t fully resolve it. And a truck roll almost never happens in isolation. The real cost at any given location shows up over a month or a quarter, once you count how often that same site needs a visit, not just what a single dispatch runs.

That’s the piece that’s easy to miss when a truck roll gets treated as a flat, predictable cost. It isn’t one. It’s a rolling, variable expense that depends on the problem, how long the technician is onsite, and how frequently that location needs help in a given stretch of time. A remote management layer, by comparison, is priced as a fixed, predictable cost per location per month, one that’s typically less than what even one or two truck rolls to that same site would run. Remote management doesn’t take every visit off the schedule, since some issues are genuinely hardware and need hands-on-site. Still, it’s built to handle the connectivity and uptime issues that don’t, so a technician only gets dispatched when a visit is truly the only path to a fix.

At the same time, the revenue riding on those screens keeps climbing. Global retail media spend is projected to cross $196 billion in 2026, with in-store and connected screens increasingly recognized by the IAB as a formal media channel alongside audio and QR-enabled activations. Roughly three-quarters of purchases still happen in a physical store, and a meaningful share of shoppers report buying something specifically because of what they saw on a screen. Every hour a display sits dark isn’t just a maintenance line item. It’s a missed impression, a missed sponsorship delivery, and in some cases a missed transaction.

That’s the real reason truck rolls deserve a closer look. Not because dispatching a technician is a mistake, but because a portion of the dispatches happening across the industry today are solving problems that could have been caught, and often resolved, before a truck ever left the lot.

For distributed networks, whether retail media screens, kiosks, or DOOH, the gap between a network that scales cleanly and one that strains under its own growth usually comes down to one variable: how many issues get resolved remotely versus how many require a person standing at the device.

1. Diagnosis Takes Longer Without Visibility Into the Edge

The most expensive truck roll isn’t the one that fixes something. It’s the one sent to find out what’s wrong in the first place. When a screen goes offline, there are several possible causes, and they don’t announce themselves:

A carrier outage or degraded signal in that specific location

A SIM that’s hit a data cap or lost provisioning

Router configuration drift after a firmware update

A power interruption at the site

A media player or CMS fault unrelated to connectivity at all

Local interference from other equipment sharing the same power or network drop

Without live visibility into the connectivity layer, a support team is often troubleshooting blind, and the safest call is frequently to dispatch someone to look. By the time a technician arrives and runs diagnostics onsite, the cause is often something that live monitoring would have surfaced in minutes.

The cost isn’t limited to the visit itself. It’s the delay in identifying root cause, the extended downtime on a screen that may be mid-flight on a paid sponsorship, and the fact that a skilled technician’s time gets spent confirming a diagnosis rather than doing higher-value work.

This is why remote diagnostics across the connectivity, hardware, and application layers has become a baseline expectation rather than an add-on for networks operating at scale. The more of the stack you can see from a dashboard, the fewer visits start with “let’s see what’s going on.”

2. Network Ownership Shapes How Fast You Can Act

Some DOOH and retail media deployments run on infrastructure that’s owned and managed by a carrier, a venue, or a legacy integrator. That model has real advantages: it’s often simpler to stand up initially, and it shifts day-to-day maintenance to someone else.

It also comes with a structural tradeoff. When the routers, SIMs, and monitoring layer belong to a third party, your own team’s access to diagnostics, carrier switching, and configuration changes runs through that partner’s process and timeline. That’s not a flaw in the model; it’s simply how a managed arrangement works, and for smaller or simpler deployments it can be the right fit.

For larger, revenue-critical networks, though, operators increasingly find value in owning more of the stack directly, meaning their own routers, their own SIM strategy, and their own management platform. Direct ownership allows a team to:

Diagnose issues in real time without waiting on a third-party escalation path

Take immediate corrective action like a remote reboot, failover, or reprovisioning

Standardize configurations across every location instead of inheriting whatever the prior integrator set up

See the full picture of a device’s health rather than a partial view

As retail media networks scale past a few hundred locations and advertisers start expecting uptime guarantees tied to campaign delivery, the amount of direct control a team has over its own infrastructure becomes a meaningful factor in how quickly problems get resolved. Neither model is wrong. It’s a question of what level of control the size and revenue stakes of your network call for.

3. Carrier Diversity Adds Resilience to the Network Path

Single-carrier deployments are common, and for good reason: they’re straightforward to plan and manage. But carrier performance isn’t uniform. It varies by:

Location (urban density versus rural coverage, indoor versus outdoor placement)

Time of day and local network congestion

Environmental factors like building materials and signal interference

When a location depends on one carrier, a local dip in signal or a temporary outage can take a screen offline even though nothing onsite has actually failed. From a support desk’s view, though, it often looks like a site issue, because the screen is dark and the location is fixed. That perception alone drives a share of dispatches toward locations where nothing onsite needed fixing at all.

That’s why multi-carrier and dual-SIM designs have become a common resilience layer in distributed networks, particularly ones spanning many geographies with variable coverage. Intelligent failover based on real performance, not just a binary up or down signal, along with the ability to switch carriers per preconfigured parameters rather than swap out a physical SIM, turns a good number of “site down” alerts into automated recovery events that never need a technician at all.

4. Remote Access Turns Field Jobs Back Into Desk Work

When a team can’t remotely reach and control edge devices, small fixes turn into field jobs by default. That includes things like:

Rebooting a router or gateway

Pushing a firmware or configuration update

Resetting a SIM session

Adjusting a network setting

Pulling logs for troubleshooting

None of these are complicated tasks on their own. Without remote access, though, each one requires a person physically at the device, which is a significant amount of overhead for what’s often a five-minute fix.

Centralized remote management platforms, capable of reaching thousands of endpoints at once, have become standard infrastructure for networks of any real size. That typically includes secure remote access to routers and connected hardware, configuration management applied consistently across locations, real-time monitoring and alerting, and visibility into each device’s lifecycle. In a DOOH or retail media context, where screens are geographically spread out and usually unattended, this kind of remote reach isn’t a convenience feature. It’s what makes managing hundreds or thousands of locations with a lean team possible at all.

5. Manual Processes Get Harder to Sustain as Networks Grow

A reactive, manual troubleshooting workflow tends to look something like this: an issue gets reported, a technician or support agent starts investigating, several systems get checked one at a time (CMS, connectivity, hardware), the root cause takes a while to pin down, and a truck roll gets scheduled to be safe.
That process works fine at a small scale. As a network grows into the hundreds or thousands of locations, though, manual troubleshooting tends to introduce more variability: outcomes depend heavily on which agent picks up the ticket, resolution times stretch out, and dispatch becomes the default answer when there isn’t a fast way to rule out a remote fix.

Automation addresses this less by replacing people and more by giving them better information faster. That typically looks like:

Unified monitoring that pulls network, device, and application data into one view

Automated alerts tied to specific, known failure conditions rather than a generic “offline” flag

Standardized troubleshooting runbooks so outcomes don’t depend on which agent is on shift

Integration between monitoring tools and the ticketing system so context travels with the ticket

With that in place, a support team can usually tell within minutes whether an issue needs a physical visit or can be cleared remotely, which keeps the operating model scalable as the location count climbs.

6. Tracking Truck Roll Prevention Tells a Fuller Story Than Cost Per Dispatch

Many organizations track truck rolls primarily as a cost line: number of dispatches, cost per dispatch. Those numbers matter, but on their own they measure the symptom rather than the cause. A more complete picture usually includes:

Percentage of incidents resolved remotely

Mean time to detect and resolve an issue

Repeat incidents at the same location

The split between connectivity-related and hardware-related failures

Uptime and revenue impact per screen, especially for locations carrying paid sponsorship or promotional content

Looking at these metrics together tends to surface a pattern: a portion of truck rolls across most networks are ones that better visibility or remote access could have resolved without a visit. Operators who treat truck roll prevention as part of network architecture and ownership decisions, not just a field service efficiency project, generally see that pattern shrink over time.

This is also where the fixed-versus-rolling distinction pays off in practice. A location with recurring issues doesn’t rack up one truck roll cost; it racks up several, and each one carries its own variables of problem type, time onsite, and whether a follow-up visit is needed. That rolling total is genuinely hard to forecast or budget against. A remote management program sidesteps that unpredictability by design: it’s a fixed cost per location per month, set below the cost of even one or two truck rolls to that site, and its entire job is to absorb as much of the connectivity and uptime troubleshooting as possible so those rolling, variable dispatch costs don’t accumulate in the first place. Framed that way, the choice isn’t remote management instead of field service. It’s remote management as the layer that keeps field service reserved for the visits that genuinely need a technician standing at the device.

Truck Rolls Should Be a Deliberate Choice, Not the Default Answer

Truck rolls aren’t going away, and they shouldn’t. Hardware fails. Screens get damaged. Power goes out. Those are legitimate, unavoidable reasons to send someone onsite.

The opportunity is in the dispatches sent to reboot equipment, troubleshoot connectivity, switch carriers, diagnose an unclear issue, or push a configuration change. Those are the categories where better visibility, more direct control, and stronger remote management tend to close the gap between “we don’t know what’s wrong” and “we already fixed it.” For DOOH and retail media operators, that usually comes down to a combination of factors: how much of the network stack you control directly, how resilient the connectivity design is across carriers, and how much can genuinely be done from a dashboard instead of a truck.

As retail media spend continues its climb toward $200 billion globally in 2026 and screens carry more direct revenue responsibility than ever, the value of keeping a location broadcasting and transacting continuously is only going up. Getting ahead of avoidable downtime isn’t about eliminating truck rolls. It’s about making sure the ones that happen are the ones that actually need to.

The Hidden Cost of Truck Rolls: 6 Reasons Your Distributed Network Is Bleeding Budget (and How to Fix It)

If you operate a DOOH or retail media network, you already know that an offline screen is rarely just an IT issue. It can mean missed impressions, incomplete campaigns, lost transactions, frustrated retailers, and uncomfortable conversations with advertisers.

The challenge is that many screen networks still depend on connectivity they do not manage or control. That may be a retailer’s shared Wi-Fi network, a local internet provider, or a collection of different vendors across hundreds of locations. Everything may work well when the network is small. As the footprint grows, however, the cracks begin to appear.

One location changes its Wi-Fi password. Another experiences poor coverage. A router goes offline without anyone noticing. A campaign underdelivers, and the operations team has to work backwards to determine what happened. This is why more DOOH and retail media companies are taking greater control of the infrastructure behind their screens.

That does not necessarily mean becoming a telecommunications provider or building every part of the network internally. It means having a dedicated connectivity strategy, clear visibility, defined service levels, and the ability to respond without depending entirely on someone else.

Here are 6 reasons why DOOH and Retail Media Networks Should Control Their Own Connectivity Infrastructure.

1. You protect the revenue that depends on screen uptime

Every screen represents an opportunity to deliver an impression, influence a purchase, or complete a transaction. When the screen goes offline, that opportunity disappears.

The content may be scheduled correctly. The campaign may have been sold. The advertiser may be expecting delivery. But none of that matters if the connection behind the screen is unavailable.

Controlling your connectivity infrastructure allows you to build the network around the actual needs of your screen footprint. That may include:

Primary cellular or wired connectivity

Automatic failover between carriers or connections

Enterprise-grade routers at each location

Remote monitoring and alerts

Usage controls and performance reporting

Clear escalation and support procedures

Instead of accepting the same generic internet setup at every location, you can design connectivity based on the importance, traffic, coverage, and revenue potential of each site. This becomes even more important in programmatic DOOH and retail media. Advertising decisions, content updates, proof-of-play records, and reporting often happen in near real time.

A campaign cannot generate value if the infrastructure needed to deliver it is unreliable.

2. You maintain control when something goes wrong

Every network experiences issues. The real difference is how quickly the problem is detected, understood, and resolved. Without direct network visibility, troubleshooting often begins with a long list of questions.

Is the screen powered on?

Is the media player working?

Did the retailer change something?

Is the local internet connection down?

Is the cellular signal weak?

Is the problem affecting one screen, one store, or an entire region?

When several different vendors are involved, each provider may only see one part of the problem. Your team is left coordinating the investigation while the screen remains offline.

A controlled network gives you a much clearer picture. You can see when a location lost connectivity, whether a secondary connection activated, how long the disruption lasted, and whether the issue is isolated or widespread.

That clarity helps your team respond with confidence. Instead of telling a retailer or advertiser: “We are still trying to find out what happened,” you can provide a more useful update: “We detected a connectivity issue at the location, traffic transitioned to the backup connection, and the screen remained operational.”

That kind of response protects more than uptime. It protects your reputation.

3. You give advertisers proof, not assumptions

Advertisers are becoming more demanding about campaign accountability, and understandably so. They want to know whether their campaign ran, where it ran, how long it was available, and whether any interruptions affected delivery.

Proof-of-play reporting is an important part of that conversation, but it does not always tell the complete story. A media player may record that content was scheduled or played while a screen was unavailable, disconnected, powered off, or experiencing another issue at the location.

Connectivity and device-health data add another layer of confidence. When your network has direct visibility into screen and location availability, you can connect operational performance with campaign reporting. That can help answer questions such as:

Was the location connected during the campaign window?

Were there any periods of downtime?

Did the connection fail over successfully?

Was the problem limited to one location?

How quickly was service restored?

Could the issue have affected campaign delivery?

This does not mean promising that nothing will ever fail. It means being able to show what happened when something did.

That transparency can strengthen advertiser trust, support more meaningful service-level agreements, and make campaign conversations easier when performance is questioned. In a market where many networks offer similar audiences and inventory, operational reliability can become a real competitive advantage.

4. You can scale without inheriting unnecessary complexity

Connectivity is often treated as a small part of a screen deployment until the network grows. A few locations can be managed manually. A few different internet providers may not create much concern. Someone can call a store when a screen stops reporting. That approach becomes much harder at 100, 500, or 1,000 locations.

At scale, small inconsistencies become operational problems. One retailer provides Wi-Fi. Another requires cellular connectivity. Some locations have strong carrier coverage, while others need a different provider. Hardware configurations vary. Support responsibilities are unclear. Billing is spread across multiple vendors. Eventually, the network becomes difficult to manage because no one has a complete view.

A standardized connectivity strategy can simplify that growth. You can establish approved hardware, preferred carrier options, consistent configuration policies, defined alerting rules, and a repeatable deployment process. Your team no longer has to reinvent the network for every new location. They can choose the right connection for the site while managing the overall footprint through one operating model.

That makes it easier to add new retailers, enter new markets, support different screen formats, and respond when the business wants to move quickly. Growth should not depend on whether someone can locate the local Wi-Fi password.

5. You reduce security and third-party risk

Retail media and DOOH screens are part of a much larger connected environment. They may include routers, media players, displays, sensors, cameras, content platforms, remote-management tools, and third-party applications.

Every connection adds another potential point of exposure. When a screen network relies on shared or unmanaged connectivity, it can become difficult to understand who has access, how traffic is separated, whether devices are properly secured, and how changes are tracked.

Greater control over the network layer allows operators to apply more consistent security policies. That may include:

Network segmentation

Firewall and access-control policies

Encrypted connections

Controlled remote administration

Device and router configuration standards

User access logs

Firmware and security updates

Alerts for unusual activity or configuration changes

This is especially important when screens operate inside retail, financial, healthcare, transportation, or other sensitive environments. Retailers and advertisers want to know that the technology operating inside their locations is being managed responsibly. Security cannot be added only after an incident occurs. It needs to be part of the connectivity and device strategy from the beginning.

6. You can retain control without building everything yourself

There is an important distinction between controlling your network and operating every part of it internally. Building an internal connectivity operation requires carrier relationships, hardware expertise, deployment resources, monitoring tools, security processes, billing systems, and ongoing technical support.

For many DOOH and retail media networks, creating all of that from scratch would take attention away from the areas where they create the most value. Their teams should be focused on growing the network, attracting advertisers, building retailer partnerships, improving content, and creating better customer experiences. This is why the market is moving toward specialized operational partners that can support:

Connectivity provisioning

Multi-carrier coverage

Primary and backup connections

Enterprise router deployment

Remote monitoring and alerting

Device and location visibility

Security support

Usage management

Technical escalation

Ongoing managed services

The strongest approach is often a hybrid model. The DOOH or retail media operator maintains strategic control over its data, service expectations, advertiser relationships, and customer experience. A specialized partner manages the day-to-day complexity behind the network. That gives the operator the benefits of control without needing to hire an entire telecommunications and network-operations team.

What controlling the network really means?

Controlling your network does not necessarily mean owning every cable, cellular tower, router platform, or monitoring system. It means knowing who is responsible, having access to the right information, and being able to make decisions without relying on assumptions.

A well-controlled network should give you clear answers to a few basic questions:

Which locations are online right now?

Which locations are operating on backup connectivity?

Where are recurring problems happening?

How long has a screen or location been unavailable?

Who is responsible for responding?

What impact could the issue have on campaign delivery or transactions?

Can the problem be addressed remotely?

Is there enough data to explain the incident to the advertiser or retailer?

If those questions are difficult to answer, the network may be running, but it is not truly under control.

The bottom line

DOOH and retail media networks are being asked to deliver more. More screens. More locations. More programmatic campaigns. More reporting. More accountability. More uptime. The infrastructure behind those screens has to grow with those expectations.

Networks that control their connectivity and operational infrastructure are better positioned to protect campaign revenue, maintain retailer confidence, support advertiser transparency, improve security, and scale without creating unnecessary operational chaos. The goal is not simply to keep a screen connected. The goal is to know that the screen is available, understand when it is not, and have a reliable process for getting it back online before a small issue becomes a larger business problem.

For network operators, the question is worth asking: Are we actively controlling the infrastructure that supports our revenue, or are we relying on infrastructure that was never designed around our business?

The answer will influence how reliably, confidently, and quickly the network can grow.

6 Reasons DOOH and Retail Media Networks Should Control Their Own Connectivity Infrastructure

Retail Media has quietly become one of the most valuable advertising channels in the digital landscape: it isn’t just growing, it’s evolving fast. In 2026, brands are no longer thinking about retail media as a “nice-to-have” add-on to ecommerce. It’s becoming a core part of advertising strategy, especially as in-store experiences become more digitized.

Here’s what’s driving that shift:

The retail media market is projected to reach $203.9 billion globally in 2026.

In-store media now contributes 10–40% of total retail media network revenue.

Over 76% of purchases still happen in physical stores.

The lines between DOOH (Digital Out-of-Home) and retail media are disappearing.

What used to be simple screens playing looping content has turned into something much bigger: a real-time, data-driven, revenue-generating ecosystem.

Below are 11 Retail Media Trends in 2026 That Are Quietly Reshaping In-Store Advertising Revenue and, more importantly, what they mean for revenue.

1. Retail Media Is No Longer Just E-commerce

Retail media started with sponsored products online. Now, it’s full-funnel.
Brands are using retail media not just to drive clicks, but to:

Build awareness

Influence decisions in-store

Drive immediate purchases

In-store screens are playing a major role here. A shopper walking down an aisle can now:

See a product

Be influenced by a screen

Make a purchase within seconds

That’s something e-commerce alone can’t replicate.

2. In-Store Screens Are Becoming Premium Inventory

Not all impressions are created equal. In 2026, brands are paying more for:

Where the screen is located

When the ad is shown

What the shopper is doing in that moment

High-value placements include:

Endcaps

Freezer doors

Checkout lanes

These are decision moments, and advertisers know it. That’s why in-store screens are now treated as premium inventory, not just filler media.

3. Programmatic Is Moving Into Physical Stores

Programmatic advertising has moved beyond digital screens at home and on mobile devices. It’s now happening inside stores.

This means:

Ads are bought and sold in real time.

Campaigns adjust automatically based on conditions.

For example:

A cold drink ad runs on a hot day.

A promotion activates when inventory is high.

Messaging changes based on time of day

This shift transforms retail media into something dynamic. But it also introduces one key dependency: continuous, reliable connectivity.

4. First-Party Data Is Driving Everything

Retailers have something most platforms don’t: actual purchase data. Not clicks, not impressions, but real transactions.

This allows brands to:

Target audiences more accurately

Understand buying behavior

Measure campaign impact directly

As third-party cookies are phased out, this data becomes even more valuable. That’s why budgets are shifting toward retail media networks.

5. Advertisers Expect Closed-Loop Measurement

In 2026, advertisers aren’t guessing anymore. They want to know:

Who saw the ad

What they bought

Whether the campaign worked

This is called closed-loop measurement. Retail media makes this possible because it connects:

Ad exposure

Purchase data

Customer behavior

The result: campaigns are judged on real ROI, not vanity metrics like impressions alone.

6. Proof of Play Is Becoming Non-Negotiable

Advertisers are asking tougher questions:

Did the ad actually run?

Where did it run?

How many times was it delivered?

This is known as proof of play. And it’s becoming a requirement. Without it:

Campaigns may not be billable.

Trust breaks down.

Revenue is at risk.

This is especially important in programmatic environments where ads are bought automatically.

7. DOOH and Retail Media Are Converging Fast

Retail media and DOOH used to be separate. Not anymore. In 2026:

In-store screens are part of broader DOOH networks.

Campaigns can run across multiple environments.

Brands can scale messaging beyond a single retailer.

This convergence creates:

More reach

More flexibility

More revenue opportunities

But it also increases complexity.

8. AI Is Optimizing Campaigns in Real Time

Artificial intelligence is now deeply embedded in retail media. It’s used to:

Adjust budgets automatically

Optimize campaign performance

Personalize creative

For example:

If a campaign is underperforming, budget shifts instantly.

If a product is selling well, ads increase exposure.

Creative updates based on audience behavior

This makes campaigns more efficient, but again, it depends on one thing: real-time data flow

9. Advertisers Are Paying for Performance, Not Presence

There’s a major mindset shift happening. It’s no longer: “The screen is on, so the ad is running.” It’s now: “Did this campaign actually deliver results?”

Advertisers care about:

Conversions

Sales lift

Engagement

If performance drops, budgets move quickly. That means networks can’t rely on visibility alone. They need consistent delivery.

10. Networks Are Scaling Faster Than Infrastructure

This is where things get interesting. Retail media networks are growing fast:

Hundreds of screens → thousands

Single locations → nationwide rollouts

But infrastructure doesn’t always keep up. Common challenges:

Connectivity inconsistencies

Network congestion

Limited monitoring

At a small scale, these issues are manageable. At a large scale, they become revenue problems.

11. Uptime Is Becoming Revenue Infrastructure

This is the shift most people don’t see. Everything we’ve talked about--programmatic, AI, proof of play--all depends on one thing: Connectivity Uptime. If a screen disconnects, even briefly:

Programmatic bids don’t come through.

Ads fail to load.

Proof of play may not register.

And the tricky part? Nothing looks broken. The screen is on. Content may still appear. Everything looks “fine.” But behind the scenes:

Revenue opportunities are missed.

Campaign performance drops.

Reporting becomes inaccurate.

Now multiply that across hundreds or thousands of screens. That’s not a small issue. That’s lost revenue at scale.

Closing Take: Retail Media Is No Longer Just Media

Retail media in 2026 is no longer just about advertising. It’s about:

Infrastructure

Data

Execution

The networks that win aren’t just the ones with the most screens. They’re the ones that can:

Deliver consistently

Measure accurately

Optimize in real time

Because in today’s environment, it’s not enough for a screen to be on--it needs to be performing.

And increasingly, that performance comes down to something simple, but critical: reliable, always-on connectivity.

11 Retail Media Trends in 2026 That Are Quietly Reshaping In-Store Advertising Revenue

Digital signage is at the core of modern retail media networks. Screens deliver ads, promotions, pricing, and branded experiences across stores, malls, and venues, and often in real time. When those screens go offline, it’s not just an inconvenience. It’s lost impressions, product promotions, missed revenue, and damaged advertiser trust.

Many retail media networks rely on in-store Wi-Fi to connect their screens. It feels like the obvious choice: Wi-Fi is already there, it’s familiar, and it keeps upfront costs low. But Wi-Fi is also the most common reason screens fail.

Below in simple terms are the 5 main reasons Wi-Fi fails digital signage networks and breaks down, and how a backup connection, such as a failover SIM data plan, can quietly protect screens when Wi-Fi becomes unstable.

1. Shared Bandwidth Problems

Wi-Fi is shared by design. In a retail environment, the same Wi-Fi network is often used by:

Point-of-sale systems

Staff phones and tablets

Inventory scanners

Guest Wi-Fi

Security cameras

Music and in-store apps

Digital screens are just one more type of device competing for attention. When the store gets busy, Wi-Fi doesn’t understand which devices matter most. It simply divides bandwidth across everything connected. What this means for screens:

Content loads slowly

Videos stutter or fail to play

Screens freeze or disconnect

Ad rotations are missed

This usually happens during peak shopping hours, exactly when retail media performance matters most.

2. Retail Networks Prioritize Everything Except Screens

In most stores, Wi-Fi is managed by internal IT teams or third-party providers. Their priorities are clear:

Payments

Operations

Staff systems

Screens are rarely at the top of that list. As a result, network changes often happen without warning:

Wi-Fi passwords are updated

Firewalls are adjusted

Security rules are tightened

Networks are upgraded or segmented

From an IT perspective, these are routine changes. From a retail media perspective, screens suddenly:

Lose access

Go offline

Stop reporting impressions

Require urgent troubleshooting

This is one of the biggest reasons digital signage Wi-Fi reliability suffers: not because anyone made a mistake, but because screens are not the network’s main concern.

3. Router Reboots and Updates Happen Without Warning

Routers are the gatekeepers of Wi-Fi, and they reboot more often than most people realize. Common causes include:

Automatic software updates

Brief power interruptions

Overheating in back rooms

Maintenance by store IT

Manual resets by staff

When a router reboots, everything connected to it disconnects, including screens. For phones and laptops, this is barely noticeable. For screens, it can mean:

Blank displays

Frozen ads

Missed campaigns

Manual restarts

In many cases, screens don’t reconnect cleanly once Wi-Fi returns. They may stay offline until someone notices.

4. ISP Outages Are Completely Out of Your Control

Even the best in-store Wi-Fi network depends on an internet service provider. And ISPs have outages. These outages can be caused by:

Construction cutting cables

Neighbourhood-wide service disruptions

Weather events

Equipment failures

Regional maintenance

When the ISP goes down, Wi-Fi goes down with it. Retail media teams often don’t find out until:

Impression numbers drop

Reports show gaps

Advertisers complain

Customer engagement suffers

Store staff report blank screens

At that point, there’s nothing anyone can do except wait. This is where Wi-Fi alone becomes a liability, because when the primary internet connection disappears, screens have no other way to stay online. Some networks address this by pairing Wi-Fi with a secondary failover data plan connection so screens aren’t fully dependent on a single internet path.

5. No Visibility When Wi-Fi Fails

One of Wi-Fi’s biggest weaknesses is that it fails silently. Most retail media networks don’t get alerts when:

Wi-Fi drops at a single store

Connectivity becomes unstable

Screens disconnect intermittently

Instead, issues are discovered through:

Missing impression data

Manual checks

Store calls

Advertiser complaints

By the time someone notices, screens may have been offline for hours, or even days. Without visibility, teams are forced to react instead of prevent. And Wi-Fi on its own offers very little insight into when, where, or why screens disconnect.

Why Wi-Fi Alone Struggles With Digital Signage

Taken together, these challenges explain why digital signage Wi-Fi reliability is such a persistent problem:

Wi-Fi is shared

Screens aren’t prioritized

Routers reboot

ISPs fail

Outages aren’t visible

Wi-Fi isn’t “bad.” It’s just not designed to be the only connection for revenue-generating screens. As retail media networks scale, these issues don’t disappear; instead, they compound.

How Retail Media Networks Reduce Wi-Fi Risk

The most reliable retail media networks don’t try to fight Wi-Fi. They design around its limitations. That often means:

Continuing to use Wi-Fi where it works well

Reducing complete dependence on store-controlled networks

Improving visibility into screen connectivity

Planning for real-world outages instead of assuming perfect uptime

Usage-based failover or a pooled data plan for continuity

This approach keeps screens online without changing how stores operate. Wi-Fi remains useful, as long as it isn’t allowed to be a single point of failure.

Final Takeaway

Wi-Fi is convenient, familiar, and widely available. But for digital signage and retail media networks, Wi-Fi alone is not reliable enough.

When screens go offline, it’s rarely random. It’s the predictable result of shared networks, router behavior, ISP outages, and lack of visibility. Retail media networks that understand these limitations, and plan for them, keep screens online, campaigns running, and advertiser confidence intact.

Retail media networks work with CyberCentra to design data connectivity, security, and hardware strategies that keep screens online even when Wi-Fi fails.
